Learning how to rescue and save lives is taught in this 28 hour course run at school several times a year. Both practical and theoretical sessions are held and tested in two written and one in-pool examination. Students and staff are then encouraged to do refresher courses once a term, and pupils have the opportunity to lifeguard at school events.

Participants must be 15 years of age or older and be able to do the following before the course starts:

  1. Swim 300 metres continuously
  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs – hands must be placed under the armpits
  3. Swim 20 metres, dive to the bottom to retrieve a 5kg weight and swim back 20 metres (within 1 minute 40 seconds)
