The Prep Phase covers the ‘Middle Years’ of a child’s education in Years 6, 7 and 8. In many British curriculum international schools, there is usually a Primary phase (Years 1 to 6) and a Secondary phase (Years 7 to 13). The adjustment from the class-based approach of Primary, where students stay mainly in one classroom with one teacher, to the subject-based approach of Secondary where the students move classrooms and change teacher for every subject, can be quite a shock from some youngsters. The purpose of the Prep Phase is to create a more gradual transition.

This occurs in the following ways:

  • Through students’ close contact with their Tutor, who will support and monitor them individually;
  • By encouraging students to develop  within the Prep Phase;
  • By providing opportunities for Prep students to take on  - including House Captaincies, Green Monitor roles, Prep Circle Representation and Prep Phase Leadership duties;
  • Through delivering a well-designed and personalised curriculum based on the National Curriculum for England and developing the skills and knowledge required to begin IGCSEs at Harrow Bangkok.

The Prep Phase provides students with a smooth transition from the Lower School to the SR5 Phase, whilst maintaining a high level of pastoral support. Consequently, students are better prepared both for the demands of external examinations in Years 10 to 13. They will have embraced opportunities to develop their ability to organise, collaborate and work independently and this will foster a passion for lifelong learning.

The Prep Phase Leadership Curriculum is carefully designed to develop leadership skills through a broad range of creative and challenging learning opportunities. During their time in the Prep Phase, students are encouraged to develop six Leadership Attributes;

  • Contributing positively to the community
  • Applying knowledge with compassion
  • Solving problems collaboratively
  • Solving problems creatively 
  • Making just choices
  • Facing challenges with determination

As these attributes develop, achievements are recognised through Prep Leadership Awards, and the notion of leadership is enhanced through our curriculum that focuses on what good leadership looks like. Prep Phase Assemblies are held to celebrate the achievements of our students and to prepare for the challenges of the coming week, term and year. These assemblies are usually student run by Prep Phase Leaders and House Captains and their Deputies. We also present awards and showcase special talents such as musical performances from our students.

In conclusion, the Prep Phase aims to prepare students for the rigour of exams in the future, whilst maintaining a strong pastoral focus and providing opportunity for development of our six Leadership Attributes. It is our mission to support students in becoming responsible global citizens ready to face the challenges in the modern world.
