Words flew thick and fast at the 10th renewal of the Harrow Scrabble tournament held in the drama studio last weekend. Harrow students pitted their wits in challenging competition of the world’s favourite board game and many new words were learnt and strategies explored before the final tiles were laid down.

In the Junior Students section David Hyland outlasted a dozen other prep school contemporaries to finish Best Harrow student and claim the cash prize and trophy. In the Senior Students section Charlotte Carter (Y13 Nehru) won in her last appearance but was once again pressed to the line by Kabu (Y11 Byron) and brother Charlie (Y11 Nehru). Around 80 participants attended from many schools throughout Thailand.

In the Open section for professional players the current world champion Pakorn Nemitrmansuk of Thailand was stopped in his tracks by Harrow’s Gerry Carter who beat him three out of three but neither could cope with former world champion Panupol Sajjayakorn who won the coveted trophy and 5,000 baht as this year’s champion displaying his amazing skills on a giant board in the final.

My thanks to the marketing department and Friends of Harrow for their help and sponsorship of this year event. Students should now focus on the House Scrabble events in Prep and Secondary that will be held at school in May.
